Rocket Learning works to ensure every child achieves full brain and body development by the age of 6, regardless of their background. Focusing on cognitive pre-school skills and leveraging an innovative digital model, Rocket Learning creates and distributes research-backed educational content to parents and pre-school educators via WhatsApp groups. Rocket Learning currently reaches more than 15% of India’s state pre-school teaching staff and 3.5 million children in 10 states. We’re supporting its mission to reach 50 million children by 2030.

CHALLENGE

India has the largest child population in the world. State pre-schooling is limited to daycare centres that focus on nutrition and healthcare rather than cognitive stimulation. As a result, children aren’t ready to learn when they enter school. Almost half the children in Indian classrooms can’t recognise a single letter or number by the time they reach second grade.

ACTION

Leveraging India’s increasing smartphone and internet penetration, Rocket Learning has developed an innovative WhatsApp-based solution that connects the government education system with parents and communities.

The nonprofit offers structured activities to support early-years stimulation and learning. These activities take the form of short, fun, accessible videos that are shared with parents via WhatsApp groups. The parents are encouraged to complete these learning activities with their children every day, and then share pictures and reports of their success stories in the group. This fosters a vibrant community that, by sharing progress, encourages greater participation.

Similarly, pre-school teachers at Anganwadi local childcare centres receive daily supplementary academic content and resources via WhatsApp, supported by in-person and online training to create a community of practice.

Rocket Learning also collaborates with central and state governments to bring early education to the top of the national agenda. The organisation played a pivotal role in launching India’s first modern Early Childhood Education policy and related budget reform.
