Challenge

10% of HIV infections globally are due to mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding. While this form of transmission has been largely curtailed across the world, it remains a significant issue in East and Southern Africa, where about 43% of all new cases of mother-to-child HIV transmission occur. In these regions, HIV-positive mothers are also increasingly at risk of dying or suffering from other co-morbidities as a result of inadequate support from public health services.

Response

m2m has trained and employed more than 12,000 local women living with HIV as community health workers who provide integrated primary health care services to women and their families. The services cover HIV prevention, care and treatment, but also education and screening for tuberculosis, malaria and non-communicable diseases such as cervical cancer, hypertension and diabetes.
