Fresh Life
Fresh Life builds dry container-based toilets for residential compounds, schools and busy markets, as well as Fresh Fit Toilets, designed for in-home use. It currently serves over 300,000 people daily in low-income urban areas of Nairobi, Kisumu and Eldoret in Kenya, and Lusaka in Zambia. Fresh Life provides general maintenance and waste management for the toilets, ensuring the waste is transferred safely to dedicated disposal centres. We are funding Fresh Life to scale its sanitation solutions to reach over 418,000 people in Kenya by 2027.

Challenge
Nearly 3 million of Nairobi’s 4.4 million residents lack access to clean toilets, particularly those living in densely populated informal settlements. In such areas, conventional infrastructure like sewers is often not a feasible option, as it is expensive to install and maintain, requires space that isn't available, and relies on increasingly scarce water resources.
Response
Fresh Life builds and operates a network of off-grid container-based toilets for low-income, dense urban areas. In Kenya, it currently operates in the cities of Nairobi, Kisumu and Eldoret, serving over 300,000 people every day at around one-third of the cost of sewer systems. The organisation partners with cities and utility companies to ensure safe waste treatment, removing over 25,000 metric tons of faecal waste per year that would otherwise end up in the environment untreated.
