Challenge
Hungry kids can't learn or grow. One in four children in Kenya are stunted, and 60% aren't receiving adequate nutrition. Midday school meals improve nutrition, boost school attendance and increase learning.
Response
Food 4 Education delivers affordable, nutritious hot meals to children attending publicly funded schools in Kenya. Its model optimises costs and operations across the entire school feeding value chain by sourcing, processing and storing ingredients in bulk that are primarily sourced from local farmers. Meals are prepared across a network of over 165 kitchens in urban and rural locations in the 13 counties where F4E operates, including its Giga Kitchen – Africa's largest green kitchen – which serves up to 60,000 meals per day.
On average, each meal costs USD 0.30, with parents and the government covering about 67% of all direct meal costs in 2025. Payment is efficient and transparent thanks to F4E's cashless payment system, Tap2Eat: each child wears a smart wristband linked to a digital wallet that parents top up using mobile money, with every transaction and meal automatically recorded in real time.
