Commonlit
CommonLit helps middle and high school students build the reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in college and beyond. CommonLit offers a free online library of high-quality texts and lessons, along with an affordable, research-backed school programme designed to revitalise the teaching of reading. The programme has been shown to consistently accelerate student reading achievement, particularly in under-resourced schools.
CommonLit’s ambition is to reach 1 in 7 secondary schools nationally and move national reading scores significantly by 2030.

Challenge
80% of low-income children and 62% of all children in the United States can’t read or write at their expected grade level. The COVID-19 pandemic further deepened existing literacy gaps, disproportionately affecting children from underprivileged backgrounds.
Response
CommonLit provides teachers and schools with the teaching materials and support they need to accelerate students' reading growth. What started out as a free digital library of lessons for teachers has now expanded its offerings to include assessments, professional development for teachers, and a full-year English Language Arts curriculum for 6th–12th grade students. This comprehensive programme is designed to ensure that all students have access to rigorous, grade-appropriate teaching.
