Community Health Impact Coalition

The Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC) is an audacious 60-country movement that aims to make professional community health workers the norm worldwide by changing guidelines, funding and policy. CHIC currently comprises thousands of community health workers and dozens of global health organisations in low- and middle-income countries that have a shared goal of advancing professional community health worker policies.

Challenge

Community health workers bring primary health services directly to their neighbours’ doorsteps. They provide reliable information, carry out health promotion and prevention activities, implement vaccination campaigns and treat illness. In low- and middle-income countries, they are often the first point of care for vulnerable and underserved populations. Yet millions of them are not salaried, skilled, supervised or supplied, making their work less effective and healthcare inaccessible to patients.

Response

The Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC) brings together thousands of community health workers and dozens of global health organisations in low- and middle-income countries. It works across three pillars of action to professionalise and strengthen community health workers globally:
  • Research - equipping international norm-setters with evidence to develop guidelines that support community health workers
  • Advocacy - influencing global financing institutions to increase funding for community health workers
  • Activation - mobilising national networks to win policies in support of professional community health workers.
