Challenge

There are 30,000 children living on the streets of Metro Manila. Most are on their own, having left home due to severe family instability. Some live in extreme poverty on the streets with their families. Subject to extreme neglect, they are vulnerable to gangs and forced labour, prostitution, theft and substance abuse.

Response

ANAK-Tnk teams conduct night patrols and run drop-in centres to provide immediate help to street children. This includes first aid, food, clothing and informal schooling. Children who cannot reconcile with their families join one of ANAK-Tnk's 29 shelter homes.

ANAK-Tnk also operates 10 daycare centres in Manila's most challenging slum areas. These centres support at-risk children and their families by providing nutritious food, basic healthcare, preschool education and tutorials for children. The centres are staffed by paid, trained volunteers from the community - most of them parents.
