Challenge

India’s farming sector is in crisis. Agriculture feeds the entire country and is its biggest source of employment, but smallholder farmers increasingly struggle to make ends meet due to unpredictable weather and income variability.

Response

Kheyti designs, adapts and sells a modular 'greenhouse in a box’ which is among the cheapest in the world. It features an innovative drip-irrigation system which enables farmers to use 90% less water on average. Along with the greenhouse, Kheyti provides farmers with support services that range from easy access to loans and quality agricultural inputs, to training and market linkages.

The cost of Kheyti's 'greenhouse in a box’ is comparable to that of a cow or buffalo – an asset in which many smallholders invest.

Over the past 4 years, Kheyti has proven that its greenhouses help smallholder farmers in India grow their yields and incomes, while also strengthening their resilience to climate change. Now, with our support, Kheyti aims to transition the 'greenhouse in a box’ from a useful innovation into a scalable national solution through government policy support and the refinement of its replicable operating model.
