Unicef
UNICEF works across more than 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, defend their rights and help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through to adolescence. We funded UNICEF in India to support government teachers’ capacity, in Madagascar and China to prepare communities for natural hazards, and in the Philippines to provide clean water and safe sanitation in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

ACTION
Working in partnership with the Indian government, UNICEF addressed the low learning levels and lack of quality teaching. This involved education reforms at district, state and national level.
In Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, UNICEF supported state education departments to increase the capacity of teacher educators. Trained teacher educators then train teachers to deliver child-centred, inclusive schooling and to assess and monitor children’s learning.
UNICEF also helped to redesign teachers’ education curriculum and training courses, focusing on learning assessment systems and testing. It helped to develop learning resource materials, including a kit for improving languages and mathematics, remedial learning packages and videos on early grade reading and numeracy.
