MOAS

The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) is a foundation headquartered in Malta that’s dedicated to providing humanitarian aid and services to the most vulnerable people around the world. We funded its search and rescue operations along the Central Mediterranean migration route in 2017. In September that year, MOAS shifted its maritime operations to South-East Asia.

CHALLENGE

The Mediterranean is the world’s deadliest maritime migration route, used by people fleeing homelands torn apart by war, violence and poverty. Their journeys are increasingly dangerous and the death toll continues to rise. In 2017, over 170,000 people crossed the Central Mediterranean from Libya to Italy.

ACTION

From April to September 2017, MOAS used the vessel M.Y. Phoenix and drones to search for vessels and rescue people in distress in the Central Mediterranean.

MOAS crews also assisted people on board, coordinated medical evacuations and connected survivors with land-based services set up to care for them.
