ACTION AGAINST HUNGER
Action Against Hunger (also known as Action Contre la Faim or ACF) is an international humanitarian organisation which has been fighting hunger globally for nearly 40 years. We supported its work to provide emergency aid after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, and to tackle malnutrition in extremely vulnerable communities in Myanmar and Burkina Faso.

ACTION
BURKINA FASO
In Tapoa province, ACF worked with 30 women’s groups to establish community vegetable gardens. Women learned how to prepare soil, sow seeds and fertilise crops.
ACF teams trained over 10,000 extremely poor households to improve their agricultural practices and distributed monetary support to increase their food consumption.
ACF also supported the Diapaga medical district with the detection, early referral and treatment of acute malnutrition. Over 6,850 children were screened and 1,200 benefitted from enriched infant food. Training was also given on water treatment kits, with 900 distributed to health centers.
MYANMAR
Working in 27 villages in the Paletwa Township, ACF undertook a socio-anthropological study and two technical surveys. These looked at farming systems and post-harvest and storage practices to develop improvement strategies.
Farmer field schools were set up for famers to learn, share and test improved methods in land preparation, seed selection, sowing, weed control, soil fertility, integrated pest management and crop diversity.
The creation of community rice banks (known as paddy banks) enabled villagers to borrow rice at the start of the growing season and replenish them after harvest. The paddy banks are managed by community-based committees that establish their own rules and regulations in a cooperative way.
